As I mentioned in the article on Automatic Writing: Purpose & Dispelling Myths, automatic writing is a tool that’s used for self healing and further developing your relationship to your higher self, inner spirit teachers and free flow inspiration.

Today, I’d like to share my own process with automatic writing so you can begin your own exercise in automatic writing.

1. Find a clear space in your home, library or office

It’s important to have a clear headspace and part of that is finding a room of some kind that is safe, quiet and clear. Outside under a tree is even better. Do not attempt this in a place that feels heavy or is cluttered with stuff.

2. Play Meditation music or classical music

Music changes your brain waves and prepares you for creativity, inspiration and meditation. In this case, you’ll be doing all three. Choose music that can be played continually for the entire exercise that does not have words or anything distracting. It should be gentle and be able to assist your mind in altering it’s consciousness.  Another good idea is to do a guided meditation first that opens up your intuitive creative mind. Then play music without words and begin.

3. Clear Your Mind

I get that this is easier said than done in the beginning. Use a simple breathing technique like just breathing deeply and slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth. Put on some meditative music while you do this. Breastwork is a wonderful way to achieve a clear mind. Read our article on Breath Work for guidance on how to do this.

4. Call on your higher self, inner spirit teacher or the divine itself

This inspiration is coming from a spiritual place. In order to receive it, ask them to come into your meditative space and be a part of the writing. You can write yourself an affirmation that does this or just ask. Even if you don’t feel that anything is happening, just trust that you’ve been heard and move on to the next step.

5. Have the pen and paper (or computer) in front of you

You do not want to be searching for your writing materials when it begins. You should be able to easily pick these things up and start. I leave them on my lap so that I can just start. If I’m using a computer I will have my hands on the computer ready to start after I’ve given some time to breathing and preparing. If I’m using the old-fashioned pen and paper I will actually have the pen in my hand poised on the paper.

6. Ask a High Vibrational Question

I say it this way because you do not want to waste your time on lower things. This will give your ego a way to interfere with the process. Ask something you really want to know and have it be healing, reflective or self realizing in some way. An inner spirit teacher will leave you with your ego if you ask questions that are unimportant or too mental.

An example of one of these questions is this: “Give me the exact lottery numbers for Wednesday.” Ya, no. This is a waste of their time and they will leave you to learn for yourself by leaving you high and dry.
A better question would be: “Why do I continue to create a lack of abundance in my financial life?” Do you see the difference? One is demanding something that may not serve you in the long run. The other gives an open opportunity for spirit to teach you something about yourself.

7. Ask and then Listen

You may need to sit and listen for a few minutes before you receive anything. Just ask maybe even more than once and then continue your breathing exercise with your pen in hand. The moment you hear even one word, write it down. Remember this is a flow sort of thing. At first it may take you 10 minutes to get a word.

The more you practice, the easier this will be until you have pages and pages of writing. Now, when you listen, the key is to not judge or analyze what you get in your head. Write it and keep on going. This doesn’t give your ego a chance to create self doubt. Also, write from “their” perspective. Just as you would hear it from another person. This moves you out of the way and allows more spirit to enter the space.

8. Push Through Any Resistance

Because automatic writing is so transformative and healing, there are times that you will feel resistance to doing it. You may find yourself being draw towards many distractions or just plain not wanting to do it. Push through this! It’s your ego! It’s your ego! Your ego does not like CHANGE. It’s like a bad word to it. The writing creates the change you are wanting. It’s natural for your ego to freak out. The way out of this is through it. Go through each step and don’t skip steps. The music and breathing help tremendously. Do that for as long as you need and then write.

9. Read The Writing Out Loud To Yourself

You can do this directly after writing or wait a day or two. I have been amazed at what Raina has written. Often, I don’t remember a lot of it after a few days. There’s times she’s spoken about events and feelings I didn’t have in the moment but within days or weeks it came up. I have also rid myself of migraine headaches by doing this writing in the thick of the headache. Emotion tends to flow in the speaking aloud that didn’t happen in the writing itself. Give yourself this healing and this beautiful gift by reading the whole writing. From their perspective of course.

10. Now, keep doing it!

Like anything else, the more you do the automatic writing, the more you will craft yourself a skill. Spirit will show up in stronger ways and your life will begin to take shape and change. I still write with Raina the good old fashioned way with pen and paper. It’s important in my own continued healing.

This is so interesting. I was automatic writing a few weeks ago and my ego was REALLY getting in the way. So I said forget it if it’s just me talking to my ego and I stopped. I read your post and then today I tried again. This time, such pure and healing information! Sometimes just having the awareness that our ego is interfering is all that we need to move past it:) Thank you for the awareness.

Frustration with automatic writing is most of the time your ego trying to interfere. This writing is very very healing. Kept it up!

It’s said that it’s not good to practice automatic writing alone… it’s said that we should do it under guidance

It’s very natural. So natural you may not even know you are doing it. Watching someone isn’t going to make a difference. Each person needs a spiritual teacher at a certain point yes. But starting with automatic writing on your own is perfectly fine.
