The easiest and most natural way to induce an altered state of consciousness is using your breath. We all breathe!  Using your breath as a gateway to increased health, happiness and to induce altered states for meditation and spiritual advancement should go without saying….

I took this breath work for granted for too many years when I first meditated and began working consciously with my spirituality. I did all the visionary work, listened to cd’s but didn’t pay much attention to how I was breathing. What a mistake that was. It made meditation harder and I couldn’t get my mind out of the way as quickly as I can now.

Finally, when I found myself in a channeling class I discovered the magick of my breath. It was a miracle to my focus, concentration, and ability to go deep. Raina was literally birthed out of my breath (and the amazing teacher I had).

So what exactly does breath work do for you to induce these blissful, peaceful states?

Let’s see…

When you begin to concentrate on your breathing, it immediately brings you to an inward focus. Kind of how you don’t hear your heartbeat all day but when you lay in bed, it gets very loud. It’s not doing anything different, but because you are still, your breath brings you to a heart inward focus.

The same thing will happen when you find a quiet place and just begin noticing your breath. A simple breath in through your nose and out through your mouth will do this.

Now What?

Begin playing with the breath, by slowing down the IN breath, making it deeper and longer. Then let it out slowly as well. This forces you to take in more air and thus creating more space in the heart for focus. It will also begin to eradicate your mental thoughts.  These thoughts may initially go crazy. Just breathe them away and keep your focus there in your heart or on a simple vision such as a nice color or point of consciousness.

Start doing this for 5-10 minutes a day, to begin with. Add music to headphones that are conducive to meditating. This will also help you to drop in faster. Work through your frustration and antsy pants!  It will be worth it.

How to Intensify the Altered State

There are many different Yogi breathing techniques, but I like to keep it as simple as possible to remember.

You can intensify your state by breathing deeper, faster and more circular. Meaning, as soon as your breath comes out you are taking in another one. In yoga, this is called “breath of fire”.   Again, play with the speed and intensity of your breath. I have induced many personal healing and emotional releases by using this type of breathing technique. See how long you can work with this starting with 10-15 minutes, working up to an hour. If you need a break at points, take a short break but not too long or you’ll lose the build-up of energy.

The energy that is being produced through this type of breathing will begin to raise your kundalini energy and perpetuate a healing/cleansing process. You may start to feel a release of energy building or begin seeing a vision of something that is working its way out of your body.  I notice this tends to happen more towards the forty-five min to one hour mark. Just allow the visions and feelings to come in.

You may also feel strange in your arms and legs. Remember that you are bringing in a large amount of oxygen to your blood, organs, and limbs. That oxygen will be felt and your energy will move. Don’t get nervous, there will be an emotional release that usually follows this.

Open your eyes and enjoy the increased awareness, peace and clarity this altered state can bring through the magick of your breath.

Enjoy your breath work and healing!

Tarik, this is something that takes time and practice. We have a course that guides you through the process of developing a relationship with the higher self. It is not a simple answer here on an article. Do you meditate? Have you ever taken a class with a teacher that guides you through a process? this is what is necessary.
